News Alert – Preserving Egypt’s Heritage: The Race to Save Artefacts in the City of the Dead

In Cairo, Egyptian conservationists are racing against time to save ancient relics as bulldozers flatten parts of the ‘City of the Dead’, a 7km-long Unesco World Heritage site. The cemetery, which houses the remains of some of Cairo’s most renowned residents, is being demolished to make way for highways as part of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s modernization drive.

Despite the destruction, teams of amateur historians and volunteers have managed to salvage artefacts dating back more than a thousand years. Among the recent discoveries is an ancient Kufi Arabic engraving half encased in concrete and buried among toppled stonework.

The demolition of the City of the Dead underscores the challenges of balancing modernization with the preservation of cultural heritage. It also highlights the importance of archaeological research in preserving our shared human history.
